She would sit in front of the loom and work without a pattern on paper. When I was younger, I asked her what her work meant, and she would say “…just look around you, the color of the wild pistachio tree and the gold of sunset.”
In this collection I explored this process of working like my grandmother, sitting on the ground in front of my work, walking around it, and existing as a part of it. The pleasure of unconditional experimentation is dependent on this engagement. Whether painting, sculpture, or weaving a kilim carpet. The physical work becomes the scene of an event. Figures detach from their context and regenerate themselves into an independent form of art.
Automatism relies on the artist's subconscious. A mixture of intention and the unexpected. The first move is unrestricted and instinctual, but the second stage is calculated. My role as artist is to find a balance between freedom and discipline. Following a dramatic visualization as well as a united foundation. As an undergraduate student, I worked with a range of contemporary and traditional materials. I experimented with techniques, tools, and media and acquired theoretical and technological skills to define my artistic approach and this collection was the result.
